Embora a figura do samurai seja tradicionalmente masculina, existiam mulheres que se tornavam guerreiras. Eram conhecidas como onna-bugeisha (女武芸者) — literalmente, “mulheres artistas da guerra”. Elas pertenciam geralmente à nobreza ou famílias samurais e eram treinadas em artes marciais e estratégias de combate para proteger seus lares na ausência dos homens.
Tomoe Gozen se destaca entre essas guerreiras por ter participado ativamente de batalhas ao lado dos homens, em uma época em que isso era extremamente incomum e muitas vezes malvisto. Sua presença nos campos de guerra era sinal de coragem inabalável e respeito entre seus companheiros.

A fama de Tomoe Gozen vem principalmente da sua participação na Batalha de Awazu, em 1184. Durante esse confronto, Minamoto no Yoshinaka, seu senhor e possivelmente amante, enfrentou tropas lideradas por seus próprios primos, Minamoto no Yoshitsune e Minamoto no Noriyori, em uma disputa pelo controle do clã Minamoto.
Segundo o Heike Monogatari, Tomoe lutou bravamente, mesmo sabendo que a derrota era inevitável. Em um dos episódios mais lendários, ela enfrentou um famoso guerreiro inimigo chamado Honda no Moroshige. Com coragem e habilidade, ela o derrubou de seu cavalo e o decapitou um feito que mostrava sua força e técnica impecável.
Diz-se que Yoshinaka, prevendo sua própria morte, pediu que Tomoe deixasse o campo de batalha, pois não queria morrer com uma mulher ao seu lado, temendo que isso manchasse sua honra. Obedecendo a ordem, ela partiu — mas não sem antes travar mais um combate épico e deixar sua marca na história.

Depois da batalha de Awazu, o destino de Tomoe Gozen se tornou envolto em mistérios e lendas. Algumas versões afirmam que ela foi capturada e forçada a se casar com um dos vencedores, enquanto outras dizem que ela se retirou da vida guerreira e se tornou monja budista, vivendo o resto de seus dias em paz e meditação.
Há ainda versões românticas que afirmam que ela jurou fidelidade eterna a Yoshinaka e jamais voltou a amar outro homem. De qualquer forma, sua figura permaneceu viva na memória popular japonesa como símbolo de honra e bravura feminina.
